Summary "This project is the result of receiving funding frin the All West Australian's Reducing Emergencies (AWARE) program, which is coordinated by the Fire and Emergency Services Authority of Western Australia (FESA). Concern was expressed through the Shire of Gingin's Local Emergency Management Committee (LEMC) regarding the potential hazards so they can be addressed using the Preparedness, Prevention, Repsonse and Recovery (PPRR) approach implemented by the Local Emergency Management Plan (LEMP). The purpose of this project was to identify and document the risks, via community consultation, that may threaten the safety and well being of the built, physical and social environments within the Shire of Gingin. The community consultation process consisted of 6 stages. Stage 1 involved conducting focus groups with key stakeholders within the Shire of Gingin to identify the risks, roles and services available. Information obtained from the focus groups assisted in the development of the pilot surveys that were distributed to community members in stage 3. The fourth stage entailed integration of focus group data and completed pilot survey data, to produce a survey which was randomly delivered to 2,120 rate payers (reaching both residents and holiday homeowners) within the Shire of Gingin. Stage 5 involved the data being analysed by a statistical computer program SPSS 11.0. Stage 6 culminated in the production of a report to be presented to the LEMC."-- p. 4.

Publication [Macedon, Vic.] : [Emergency Management Australia], [2000?]
Note Entrant : Safer Communities Award 2000
Summary 'Be prepared' -- that was the motto taken to heart by Dubbo City Council when planning their Y2K strategy. No tonly did Council prepare for risks associated with the 'millennium bug', they were also able to prepare for any risks that might threaten Dubbo in the future. In addition to a testing, repair, replacement and retirement program, Council went that extra step further to include a public awareness program; cooperation and consultation with local emergency services; provision of assistance to local businesses and other local governments in NSW; as well as the development of contingency plans for critical business functions. By treating Y2K as a 'business risk issue' and not just a computer or IT problem, Dubbo was recognised worldwide as a leader in Y2K preparedness.
