Resource feedback

As Australians we need to be aware of likely hazards and potential disasters; how, when and where they are likely to occur, and the main problems which may result.

Most of all, we should be aware of how to cope with their effects. Being one of the most culturally and linguistically diverse countries in the world, it is essential that Australia builds cohesive communities to capably prepare for, respond to and ensure recovery from incidents, crises and other emergencies.

This web-based resource aims to enhance the understanding of emergency management issues faced by students in years 8-10 including students from culturally and linguistically diverse backgrounds. It celebrates the diversity of students and acknowledges the educational benefits of incorporating a range of life experiences into teaching and learning.

The resource can be applied across a number of cultural backgrounds and adapted for specific cultural, language and religious contexts.

Natural disasters and the correlation to emergencies features strongly across all state and territory curricula and teachers are encouraged to use this resource in a cross-curricula approach to address essential learnings or key subject areas such as English, Studies of Society and Environment or The Arts. The resource is linked to state and territory curriculum frameworks where these are available.

The resource will continue to have additional lesson plans, digital resources and other teaching and learning activities added to it over the coming months and years. Please add this resource to your FAVOURITES on your web browser and return to see what’s new!

Throughout this resource the use of the words disaster & emergency are used interchangeably.
