Forty of Australia's top business leaders met with the then Prime Minister and senior Australian Government ministers at the Business-Government Ministerial Forum on National Security in Canberra on Wednesday 23 June 2004.
Then Attorney-General Philip Ruddock chaired the forum, which was attended by the Prime Minister, the Foreign Minister, the Deputy Prime Minister, the Director-General of ASIO, the Commissioner of the Australian Federal Police and the Managing Director of the Australian Stock Exchange.
The purpose of the forum was to strengthen the partnership between business and government in the protection of Australia against terrorism. It was the first opportunity for most senior leaders of key sectors of Australian business to come together in an open forum to discuss security issues face-to-face with senior Government ministers.
Business leaders expressed a strong desire of industry to continue engaging directly with government on national security issues. The Business-Government Advisory Group on National Security was established as a result of the forum.
