REDFERN WATERLOO PATHWAYS TO PREVENTION, NSW
The National Crime Prevention Programme has committed $593,000 to the Redfern/Waterloo Pathways to Prevention project over two years. This early intervention initiative, to be implemented in partnership with the NSW Attorney-General's Department, is aimed at ensuring appropriate community support for children and their families through the early years of development and transition.
The project will incorporate the involvement of Australian Government, State and local government, and non-government organisations and services to support children and their families in the Redfern/Waterloo area of NSW. This will be achieved through providing focus on eliminating or reducing the effects of risk factors while providing support to protective factors.
Risk factors can be seen in many areas. For example, school failure is a strong predictor of truancy, involvement in crime and self-harming behaviours. Child abuse and neglect including harsh, inconsistent parenting styles are also key risk factors. Key life phases and transition points, such as beginning school or moving from primary to secondary school, will be the focus of attention.
The project will be undertaken over two phases. The first phase will consist of an audit/analysis of services that aim to mitigate the risk and enhance the protective factors, currently being provided for children 0 - 14 years, and their families by various government and non-government agencies in the area. The outcomes from this assessment will help identify interventions to be implemented in the second phase of the project.
Interventions aimed at reducing crime should ensure that all school, community and family service providers contributing to the well being of children and families are coordinated to maximise benefits. In implementing the second phase of the project, the NSW Attorney-General's Department will work in partnership with the NSW Department of Eduction, with three local area schools acting as centres of support for children and families at risk. The project is currently scheduled to conclude in April 2005.
