Regional Flood Mitigation Program
On 1 July 2007, the Regional Flood Mitigation Program (RFMP) was incorporated into the Natural Disaster Mitigation Program (NDMP) to maximise flexibility and streamline administration.
The former RFMP was introduced in 1999 by the Australian Government to reduce the cost of flooding in rural, regional and outer metropolitan Australia.
Over the life of the program approximately $75 million was allocated to over 270 RFMP projects nationwide.
Funds were available for flood mitigation measures that:
- protected the community and its existing infrastructure
- promoted community safety, and
- reduced the loss of life and flood damage
Projects included measures such as:
- flood control dams
- levees
- channel improvements
- community awareness
- flood warning systems
- house raising
- flood proofing buildings
- bypass floodwaysn
- retarding basins
