Australia's Framework for Law and Justice Engagement with the Pacific

On 15 June 2010, the Attorney-General, the Hon Robert McClelland MP and the Parliamentary Secretary for International Development Assistance, the Hon Bob McMullan MP, launched Australia’s Framework for Law and Justice Engagement with the Pacific.

The Framework provides a statement of priorities and principles that will inform Australia’s future development activities in the Pacific law and justice sector including:

  • working in partnership with our Pacific island neighbours to develop strategies and approaches to law and justice that are appropriate to local circumstances and contexts;
  • complementing and building on existing systems, not overriding customary laws and practices;
  • ensuring Australia’s development activities are well coordinated and targeted.

The Framework will help ensure that Australia’s work in this area is well directed, targeted and comprehensive. The Framework will also be supplemented by practical mechanisms to improve leadership and coordination of Australia’s engagement in the Pacific law and justice sector.
