Security Legislation Review Committee
The former Attorney-General, the Hon Philip Ruddock MP, tabled the Security Legislation Review Committee’s report in the House of Representatives on June 15 2006 .
Section 4 of the Security Legislation Amendment (Terrorism) Act 2002 requires the Attorney-General to cause a public and independent review of the operation of Security Acts relating to terrorism.
The Security Legislation Review Committee was established on 12 October 2005 and reviewed the operation, effectiveness and implications of amendments made by the:
- Security Legislation Amendment (Terrorism) Act 2002
- Suppression of the Financing of Terrorism Act 2002
- Criminal Code Amendment (Suppression of Terrorist Bombings) Act 2002
- Border Security Legislation Amendment Act 2002
- Telecommunications Interception Legislation Amendment Act 2002
- Criminal Code Amendment (Terrorism) Act 2003
On 21 April 2006 the Committee provided a written report to the former Attorney-General and the Parliamentary Joint Committee on Intelligence and Security. The Australian Government is considering the recommendations of the Security Legislation Review Committee Report, along with the recommendations made by the Parliamentary Joint Committee’s review of the counter-terrorism legislation which was tabled in Parliament on 4 December 2006.
