The principal objective of the Attorney-General’s Department (AGD) is to provide essential support and expert advice to the Commonwealth Government on a wide range of legal and policy issues to achieve a just and secure society.

Who we are looking for

Not everyone who works for the Attorney-General’s Department has legal training. While a lot of the Department’s employees do hold law degrees, many come from a variety of backgrounds.

AGD’s graduates need to be motivated, enthusiastic, possess integrity, and have strong communication, interpersonal, analytical and research skills.

We are looking for Graduates with any of the following backgrounds: Accounting, Arts, Business, Commerce, Humanities, Information Technology, Law, Political Science, Public Administration and Social Sciences.

Opportunities

The Graduate Program is designed to assist you to develop your professional skills and abilities. There are two main components of the Graduate Program:

  • three strategic work placements of four months each. As you work through different areas of the Department you will experience new challenges which will help you to develop your potential and new skills.
  • professional training modules – throughout the year, you will participate in a number of learning and development courses targeted to the professional development requirements of a recent university graduate new to the Australian Public Service. This includes an intensive orientation program.

The selection process

Applicants must be Australian Citizens and hold, as a minimum, a qualification equivalent to a three year Australian undergraduate degree prior to commencement. Health, security and character clearances, and evidence of qualifications must also be met.

The online application process requires you to complete information about yourself including personal details and academic qualifications. These details will be verified before successful applicants commence with the Department. Applications for the 2010 Graduate Program will open in May 2009.
