Financial Intelligence Unit (FIU) Workshop Brisbane

The workshop program was designed to promote information sharing between FIUs in the Pacific region and to build on the knowledge and skills covered in the previous two FIU workshops. The workshop focussed on four key areas: supervising bank and reporting entity compliance with anti money laundering (AML) obligations; analysing and assessing the risk of money laundering by country; completing a high-level self assessment of FATF Recommendation compliance in preparation for a Mutual Evaluation; and using statistical measures to evaluate AML performance.
The workshop had a large practical focus and each country also provided an update on the progress of their AML system. Presenters for the workshop included Dr Yunus Husein (Director of the Indonesian FIU and outgoing APG Co-Chair), Associate Professor Jason Sharman from Griffith University, Mr Bob Perry from AUSTRAC, and Mr Andrew Milford, currently working with AMLAT in his capacity as a banking supervision specialist. Mr Quentin Hanich from the Australian National Centre for Ocean Resources and Security (ANCORS) also provided a presentation on how AML systems in the Pacific could identify and disrupt the money trail of illegal fishing and options to reform the management of natural resources to reduce corruption.
Countries who attended were Cook Islands, Vanuatu, Kiribati, Samoa, Tonga, Tuvalu, Fiji, Federated States of Micronesia, Republic of Marshall Islands, Palau, Solomon Islands, Papua New Guinea, Nauru, Niue and Indonesia.
