Under the Pacific Legal Knowledge Program, AMLAT and the Pacific Unit ran the second regional International Crime Cooperation Workshop in Samoa from 30 April to 2 May 2007. The workshop was hosted by the Attorney-General of Samoa, Mr Ming Leung Wai, who provided an opening address at the workshop.
The workshop brought together police officers, prosecutors and central agency legal officers from across the Pacific and aimed to enhance their capacity to initiate and respond to proceeds of crime, extradition and mutual assistance matters. It also facilitated communication and relationships between agencies, both domestically and internationally.
The workshop was based around a hypothetical fraud scenario that had participants tracing proceeds of crime during a live investigation, working with counterpart agencies and looking at mutual assistance and extradition requests.
Thirty-seven officers, representing all Pacific Islands Forum member countries, participated in the workshop.
Presenters included representatives from the Australian Government Attorney-General’s Department, the Australian Federal Police and the Commonwealth Director of Public Prosecutions.
