Customs and border control

The Australian Government Attorney-General's Department plays a supporting role in the administration of customs and border control. The Australian Customs Service and the Department of Immigration and Multicultural Affairs have carriage over this area of government.

However, the Australian Government Attorney-General's Department assist in various aspects, such as the regulation of the trade of specific goods such as human embryos. We also assist with the planning and preparation for national emergencies through Emergency Management Australia regarding border control in the instance of an avian flu outbreak or other wide-spreading emergency issues.

The Australian Customs Service manages the security and integrity of Australia's borders. It works closely with other government and international agencies, in particular the Australian Government Attorney-General's Department, Australian Federal Police, the Australian Quarantine and Inspection Service, the Department of Immigration and Multicultural Affairs and the Department of Defence, to detect and deter unlawful movement of goods and people across the border.

The Department of Immigration and Multicultural Affairs administers Australia's entry requirements, security and identity checks.   The Department of Immigration and Multicultural Affairs works with other Australian Government agencies and foreign governments to deter or prevent those who try to enter Australia illegally and how the Department works with airlines and shipping companies.
