Export of human embryos

The previous Attorney-General's Department’s permit scheme for embryo exports was replaced on 12 June 2006 by controls administered by the Therapeutic Goods Administration (TGA). Permission to export is only required if the internal volume of the immediate container in which the embryos are packed exceeds 50mL. More information is available on the TGA web site.

The export and import of embryos needs to comply with normal Customs procedures. For information about Customs procedures for importing or exporting human embryos please contact 1300 363 263 or e-mail information@customs.gov.au.

For information on human embryo cloning or embryonic research please refer to the National Health and Medical Research Council’s web site.
