AusCheck - Australian Security Vetting Service
Important information
On 1 December 2009 the Government announced the formation of a single security vetting agency to be located within the Department of Defence. The newly formed Australian Government Security Vetting Agency (AGSVA) will begin operation on 1 October 2010 and will be the sole authority, apart from a few exempt agencies, for the granting of Commonwealth security clearances.
The Australian Security Vetting Service (ASVS) will transfer to the AGSVA as a Machinery of Government change on 1 October 2010.
During the period leading up to the transfer the ASVS will be operating with reduced capacity and will be unable to process any new requests for security clearance work.

AusCheck is a branch of the National Security Law and Policy Division within the Australian Attorney-General's Department.
AusCheck is composed of two business units:
AusCheck - Australian Security Vetting Service
AusCheck - Australian Security Vetting Service (ASVS) undertakes security clearance action for the Department and on behalf of other Commonwealth agencies and State and Territory agencies.
Security clearances are conducted in accordance with the Protective Security Manual, which sets out procedures for assessing the suitability of employees and contractors to access security classified information and restricted areas.
AusCheck - Background Checking Service
AusCheck - Background Check Service (BCS) undertakes background checking services for the Aviation Security Identification Card (ASIC) and Maritime Security Identification Card (MSIC) regimes.
Under the AusCheck Act 2007 and relevant regulations, AusCheck determines whether a person is eligible to hold an ASIC or an MSIC on the basis of whether the person has been imprisoned in relation to a ‘disqualifying offence’ and other checks.
In addition, AusCheck provides the Government with policy advice on vetting, background checking and related matters, in conjunction with other Divisions in the Department.
