Constitutional Policy Unit

The Constitutional Policy Unit provides assistance and advice on matters of constitutional policy development and litigation and in relation to constitutional issues having general implications for Commonwealth and federal arrangements.

Our areas of responsibility

The Constitutional Policy Unit is attached to the Legal Services and Personal Property Securities Division and works to the Deputy Secretary, Civil Justice and Legal Services.

The function of the Unit is to provide assistance and advice on matters of constitutional policy development and litigation.

The Unit provides advice and assistance in relation to constitutional issues having general implications for Commonwealth and federal arrangements.  This includes advice on the question of the Attorney-General's intervention in constitutional litigation, and the implications of such litigation for Commonwealth legal policy.  It also includes advice on questions of amendments to the Commonwealth Constitution.
