Closing the Gap for Indigenous Australians - Northern Territory - Night Patrol Services

Budget 2008-09

Fact Sheet

Key Elements

The Australian Government has committed $17.7 million to continue night patrol services in the 73 Indigenous communities identified in the Northern Territory Emergency Response (NTER).

Background

Night patrols assist people at risk, including those who are intoxicated, juveniles, victims of violence and the homeless. The night patrols work in local community areas, identify people who may be at risk and take them to an appropriate place (e.g. home, safe house, hospital).

Night patrols have a positive effect on the communities in which they operate, as they provide increased community safety and constructive employment for local Indigenous people.

Implementation

Night patrol services will be delivered through the Northern Territory shire councils and directly through Indigenous organisations, where appropriate. This funding will cease on 30 June 2009.

Total Government Funding

The Australian Government has committed total funds of $17.7 million in 2008-09. Continuation of the program will be informed by the outcomes of the NTER review later this year.
