The community is concerned about family breakdown including how the family law system affects separated family members. Often it seems to take too long, be too hard and too expensive to sort things out. This can take its toll on families.
In 2003 the House of Representatives Standing Committee on Family and Community Affairs conducted a wide-ranging inquiry into child custody arrangements in the event of family separation. Many Australian families are affected directly or indirectly by conflict, separation and divorce and this is a significant community issue.
