The evidence reporting that private practitioners have disengaged from legal aid work clearly demonstrates that labour markets for legal aid in Australia have changed since 1990. However, the dimensions of labour market change and its significance for the mixed model is less clear.
- Review of remuneration and red tape in grants processes
Research commissioned by the Attorney-General’s Department in 2006 confirmed anecdotal evidence that private practitioners were moving away from the provision of legal aid services. In response, the Department commissioned a study to explore arrangements for engaging and remunerating private legal practitioners providing legal aid services in family law matters.
