Mutual Assistance and Extradition

The Mutual Assistance and Extradition Branch administers and reviews the laws relating to mutual assistance in criminal matters and extradition.  The Branch is responsible for mutual assistance and extradition casework under the Mutual Assistance in Criminal Matters Act 1987 and Extradition Act 1988 and casework arising from the International Criminal Court and the international war crimes tribunal.  The Branch participates in negotiations on behalf of Australia for bilateral and multilateral treaties on international criminal legal cooperation matters, and is responsible for issuing criminal justice certificates.

The Branch also collaborates with countries in the region and does capacity building work.
