The Department is developing the National Indigenous Law and Justice Framework (formerly Strategy) as a priority.
The Framework is intended to facilitate the development of a coordinated, long-term and multi-jurisdictional approach to reduce the pressing and complex law and justice issues affecting Indigenous Australians.
The consultative draft National Indigenous Law and Justice Strategy was sent to stakeholders and made publicly available on the Australian Government Attorney‑General’s Department’s web site for comment in July 2007, with responses due in October 2007. The Department received substantial feedback from over seventy key stakeholders. Analysis of the feedback has informed the development of the Framework.
On 28 March 2008, the Standing Committee of Attorneys‑General (SCAG) agreed to establish a Working Group to advance the Framework. Please direct any enquiries on the Framework to Christine Freudenstein, Indigenous Law and Justice Branch, on (02) 6250 6585 or e-mail christine.freudenstein@ag.gov.au .
