Indian Ocean Territories
The Indian Ocean Territories (IOT) comprise Christmas Island (CI) and the Cocos Keeling (CKI) Islands. The Territories are the westernmost part of Australia and the Australian Government Attorney-General’s Department (AGD) plays a major role in the provision of services to them.
Services provided directly by AGD include:
- Power generation and distribution
- Health Services
- Administration
- Public Employee Housing
- Justice Services.
Services provided by a number of agencies under Service Delivery Agreements include:
- Policing
- Education
- Ports
- Airports.

- Cocos (Keeling) Islands
The Cocos (Keeling) Islands are made up of 27 coral islands. More information about the islands can be found in this section.
- Government Gazettes & Community Bulletins
The Indian Ocean Territories issues its own Government Gazettes. These are official publications that provide information about government matters and makes government announcements, including proclamations, appointments, delegations and fees and charges, which relate to the Territories of Christmas Island and Cocos (Keeling) Islands.
- State-type Assistance Grants
In May 2001 the Commonwealth implemented a program to fund the equivalent of Western Australian State-type assistance for the Indian Ocean Territories. Information on applications for State-type assistance grants is located here.
- Economic Development Funding Programme
The Economic Development Funding Programme aims to promote economic development and enhance business opportunities in the Indian Ocean Territories by providing financial support to eligible organisations and activities. The Cocos (Keeling) Islands Economic Development Association Inc and the Christmas Island Economic Development Committee Inc are the first point of contact for making an application.
