DISASTER PROTECTION FUNDS FOR VICTORIA
The Rudd and Brumby Governments will provide almost $1 million for eleven natural disaster mitigation projects across Victoria.
Federal Attorney-General Robert McClelland said the money, which is being matched by local agencies, is part of the $18.6 million Natural Disaster Mitigation Program. This program funds a range of measures that contribute to safer, sustainable communities.
“Investing in natural disaster mitigation strategies is crucial to protecting residents, local businesses, local economies and the wider community when a disaster strikes. It helps to make communities more resilient and able to recover from natural disasters,” Mr McClelland said.
Victorian Minister for Police and Emergency Services Bob Cameron said it will enable Victoria to reduce future property damage and the threat to lives, as well as help reduce the distress and disruption experienced in times of flooding.
“This important funding injection will go toward a number of projects, with the majority having a particular focus on solving the major flooding problems that have impacted on Victoria,” Mr Cameron said.
“By understanding the nature of the threat we can look at risk mitigation options such as altering our planning regulations, protecting our infrastructure and telecommunication towers.”
The program is delivered through partnerships between all levels of government, with the Commonwealth Government contributing up to one-third of approved project costs and State and Territory governments and local agencies making up the balance.
