Who we are looking for

Working in a department that delivers critical policy for the country is unique, challenging and always exciting. Tom, graduate.

We are looking for graduates who are passionate about making a positive contribution to our goal of achieving a just and secure society for Australia. We offer a long-term career path, the opportunity to make lifelong networks, and an inclusive working environment that values people and endeavours to inspire, encourage and empower them to achieve.

Our policy and program and legal practice streams are a great start if you are looking to excel in a policy, program management, corporate or legal career. As the department is widely diverse in the programs and policies we deliver, we encourage graduates from all disciplines to apply. These include:

  • law
  • arts / humanities / international studies
  • business / management
  • commerce / economics / finance
  • communication / media / public relations
  • human resources
  • information technology
  • national security
  • science.

The legal practice stream is open to graduates with a Bachelor of Laws or a Juris Doctor, completed no more than four years before the program starts, who are:

  • eligible to enrol in a practical legal training course that leads to admission in Australia, or
  • eligible for admission in Australia, or
  • admitted to practice in Australia.

We also strongly encourage and support graduates who come through the Australian Government Indigenous Recruitment Program, managed by the Australian Public Service Commission (APSC).

As a graduate in the policy and program stream, you will have a strong desire to strengthen your skills and experience through a broad range of opportunities across policy and program areas of the department.

As a graduate in the legal practice stream, you will have a strong desire to utilise and strengthen your legal skills through practising law within the Australian Government Solicitor (AGS), one of four groups within the department.

Graduates in both streams will also demonstrate sound judgement, a high level of flexibility and resilience, will be results-orientated and will think creatively to find solutions that work.

Eligibility requirements

To be eligible for our graduate program, you must:

  • be an Australian citizen
  • have completed your qualification with a minimum of a credit average (for the legal practice stream, this must be a minimum credit average in your law subjects)
  • have completed your degree or post-graduate qualification no more than four years before the program starts
  • provide evidence of your qualification.

All successful candidates will also be required to meet health, security and character clearances, and provide evidence of your qualifications.
