Legal Practice - Australian Government Solicitor

Legal Practice Stream – Australian Government Solicitor

As a legal practice graduate, you will have the opportunity to work within the Australian Government Solicitor (AGS) with some of Australia's foremost legal minds on matters of national significance.

AGS is part of the Attorney-General's Department and is the Australian Government's central legal service, providing legal services to the Australian Government, its various departments, entities and agencies. AGS has offices in every capital city and employs around 350 lawyers. AGS is a self-funded, fee-for-service Commonwealth trading enterprise that competes in the market. Our lawyers have time recording responsibilities and billable targets. We have a strong focus on providing excellent legal advice and representation, outstanding client service and on being effective and efficient in our business operations.

We work in government and public law, and specialise in constitutional and legislative interpretation. Our long experience in working with government agencies means we understand the Government's legislative and regulatory frameworks, policy objectives and key programs. AGS has an unmatched High Court practice and also provides extensive commercial law services to government. AGS delivers services through three national legal practices:

The Legal Practice stream is a 12-month development opportunity with rotations across a number of the practices, a client placement and a part-time pro bono placement. You will receive extensive support from supervisors and access to learning and development activities, including the opportunity to complete your practical legal training to be admitted to practice.

We invite applications from graduates who have completed a Bachelor of Laws or a Juris Doctor within the past four years, and are eligible to enrol in a practical legal training course that leads to admission in Australia; eligible for admission in Australia; or admitted to practice in Australia. You must have completed, or will complete, your degree with strong academic results (distinction average).

Legal practice graduates are based in Canberra with the possibility of one or more positions being located in Sydney and Melbourne. Financial assistance may be offered where graduates are relocating from their home state.
