The National Visits Media Card (NVMC) allows media representatives to cover visits by foreign dignitaries to Australia.
The NVMC is used by all media representatives—including journalists, photographers, camera operators and sound recorders—seeking to gain access to official events associated with foreign dignitaries in Australia.
The card is recognised Australia-wide and provides event officials with a quick and easy way to identify the card holder as a registered media representative. The card does not entitle the holder to any special consideration or close proximity to visiting dignitaries or associated events.
All applicants must undergo a basic 100-point identity check and be endorsed by their news editor, chief of staff or equivalent senior staff member. The application form contains further information about the application process and conditions of use.
Applications can be lodged in person at any Australia Post KeyPOST outlet throughout Australia. A processing fee of $30 will apply for each application.
Cards are issued over a two-year validity cycle and expire on 31 December of each odd calendar year. The department will contact card holders to advise of the renewal process, and card holders should destroy expired cards appropriately.
A minimum of 15 working days is required to produce a NVMC from the time of lodgement at Australia Post. Applicants should be aware of the time required for processing when applying for cards prior to major visits.
