Australian Government Solicitor

AGS is a group within the Attorney-General's Department, headed by Australian Government Solicitor, Michael Kingston. It provides a full range of legal services to government, a role that it has fulfilled since Federation and its sole reason for existing.

AGS is one of Australia's largest national legal services providers. It has offices in every capital city and approximately 320 lawyers who cover some 40 different areas of law related to government.

As a practice, AGS is structured into three groups that work together on complex matters that require expertise across several areas of law:

The Australian Government Solicitor website provides further information about the services that it provides and a list of contacts in its different sections and offices.

Using AGS

AGS is an approved provider of legal services to government for all categories of work under the Legal Services Multi-Use List (LSMUL).

AGS participation in the LSMUL arrangements is governed by a memorandum of understanding (MOU) with the Office of Legal Services Coordination.

Agencies should continue to approach AGS for legal services under the arrangements outlined in the LSMUL Guidance Material. When entering into arrangements with AGS the default terms and conditions provided under the MOU apply.
