Biographical details—John Reid

John Reid, A/g Deputy Secretary, Civil Justice and Corporate Group

John is currently the acting Deputy Secretary, Civil Justice and Corporate Group. Previously, John has led the Office of International Law in the Attorney-General’s Department since 2013. He has been a legal adviser on international law to government for over a decade, working across a range of legal areas.

In his role as First Assistant Secretary of the Office of International Law, John is responsible for advice to government on all areas of international law, including international human rights and refugee law, international security, international humanitarian law, environment law, law of the sea, air law and international trade and investment law.

John has been appointed Agent for Australia before the International Court of Justice and the Permanent Court of Arbitration, and has appeared before both those tribunals.

Previously, John has worked as counsel in the Office of General Counsel and as an in-house legal adviser for the Australian Customs and Border Protection Service. He has also served as Departmental Liaison Officer to Attorney-General Robert McClelland in 2008-09.
