Indigenous Legal Assistance Programme

The Australian Government is committed to achieving real and positive change in the lives of Indigenous Australians and to protecting the most vulnerable members of our community, including by providing access to justice.

The Indigenous Legal Assistance Programme funds organisations to deliver culturally appropriate legal assistance services necessary to ensure that Indigenous Australians receive the help needed to assist them to overcome their legal problems and fully exercise their legal rights.

Seven Indigenous organisations are funded under the programme to deliver legal assistance services at a number of permanent sites, court circuits and outreach locations in urban, rural and remotes areas.

Funding for all activities is allocated by providers in accordance with programme guidelines. These guidelines apply from 1 July 2015 and are available on the GrantConnect website.

The Australian Government also funds the National Indigenous Law Awards from the Indigenous Legal Assistance Programme.
