In February 2010, the Crimes Legislation Amendment (Serious and Organised Crime) Act 2010 (Cth) introduced provisions for the making of unexplained wealth orders into the Proceeds of Crime Act 2002 (Cth).

On 13 July 2011, the Parliamentary Joint Committee on Law Enforcement initiated an inquiry into Commonwealth unexplained wealth legislation and arrangements.

On 19 March 2012, the Parliamentary Joint Committee on Law Enforcement handed down the final report on its inquiry.

The government's response was tabled on 21 February 2013.
