The Safety, Rehabilitation and Compensation Act 1988 (the SRC Act) establishes the Commonwealth workers' compensation and rehabilitation scheme.
The SRC Act covers employees of the Commonwealth, Commonwealth authorities, the Australian Capital Territory Government and a small number of private corporations, which self-insure their workers' compensation liabilities under the scheme.

Firefighter provisions of the SRC Act
On 7 December 2011, the Safety, Rehabilitation and Compensation Amendment (Fair Protection for Firefighters) Act 2011 amended the disease provisions contained in section 7 of the SRC Act to include presumptive provisions for some cancers suffered by firefighters. The department has commenced a review of these provisions.
