Review of the Seafarers Rehabilitation and Compensation Act 1992

We have engaged Professor Tim Driscoll, an independent consultant in epidemiology, occupational health and public health, to undertake a review of the specified diseases and employment declared for the purpose of the Seafarers Rehabilitation and Compensation Act 1992 (Seafarers Act).

In December 2019, a discussion paper was published seeking broad views and benefits of practical experiences and techniques from Australians who have advanced, achieved or experienced best practice cooperative workplaces.

Statutory Review of the role and functions of the Asbestos Safety and Eradication Agency

Closing date
In 2019, The Asbestos Safety and Eradication Agency's role and functions were reviewed five years after its establishment, in line with section 47 of the Asbestos Safety and Eradication Agency Act 2013. The review invited submissions from organisations and members of the public, and the final report tabled before Parliament on 27 November 2019.

Attracting major infrastructure, resources and energy projects to increase employment: Project life greenfields agreements

Closing date
In 2019, this paper provided background information on the greenfields enterprise agreement provisions in the Fair Work Act 2009 (Fair Work Act) and sought views (by way of written submissions) on whether and how enterprise agreements might be applied for the life of greenfields projects.

Closing date
In 2019, this paper provided background information on the current penalty framework in the Fair Work Act 2009 (Cth) (Fair Work Act) and sought input from the community (by way of written submissions) about the operation of the framework.

Review of the firefighter provisions of the SRC Act 1988

Closing date
In 2020, a review of the firefighter provisions of the Safety, Rehabilitation and Compensation Act 1988 (SRC Act) was conducted. Following a targeted stakeholder consultation and submission process, a final report is being prepared for the government’s consideration.

Review of the Building and Construction Industry (Improving Productivity) Act 2016

Closing date
On 6 December 2018, the Australian Government tabled the Review of the Building and Construction Industry (Improving Productivity) Act 2016. The review found that the Australian Building and Construction Commission activities are consistent with its role as a full-service regulator, and the higher penalties applying to the sector should be retained.

Review of Workplace Health and Safety laws in the construction industry

In 2018, the national review of the Work Health and Safety (WHS) regulatory framework in the building and construction industry (the review) was completed.  The review was conducted by Seyfarth Shaw Australia with assistance from the former Department of Jobs and Small Business.

Review of Security of Payment Laws

Closing date
In 2017, the Government commissioned the national Review of Security of Payment Laws (the Review) to examine ways to improve consistency in security of payment legislation and enhance protections to ensure subcontractors get paid on time for work they have done. The final report was published 21 May 2018.

Review of the Deemed Disease Legislative Instrument 2017

Closing date
In August 2017, Dr Tim Driscoll provided to the department a supplementary report to support the update of the Comcare Scheme's current deemed diseases legislative instrument. Information contained in this report was used to develop the Instrument.

Review of the Greenfields Provisions of the Fair Work Amendment Act 2015

Closing date
In 2017, Mr Matthew O'Callaghan was engaged to undertake a review of the greenfields agreement provisions of the Fair Work Act 2009 which were the subject of legislative amendments in 2015. As part of the review, employee organisations, employer organisations and parties that have experience with greenfields agreement making were invited to provide submissions.

Review of Safe Work Australia’s role and functions

Closing date
On 8 November 2016, the report on the Review of Safe Work Australia's Role and Functions was tabled in Parliament. The Review was a requirement of section 72 of the Safe Work Australia Act 2008 (Cth) (SWA Act).

Managing Workers Compensation in the Commonwealth

Closing date
In 2014, a sub-committee of deputy secretaries was set up to improve workers compensation outcomes for the Australian Public Service (APS). From late 2014 to mid-2016 the working group piloted initiatives to improve performance in a number of areas. A booklet was developed, highlighting some of the achievements of the pilot programs.

Better regulation and governance, enhanced transparency and improved competition in superannuation

Closing date
On 28 November 2013, the Australian Government released a discussion paper seeking feedback on a range of policy proposals for superannuation. It asked for feedback on the best way to improve transparency and competition in the employee default superannuation funds market, and policy proposals arising from the government's election commitments on superannuation.

Safety, Rehabilitation and Compensation Amendment (Fair protection for firefighters) Act 2011 Review

Closing date
In December 2013, a review into the Firefighters' Act was undertaken by Ms Raelene Sharp to assess whether amendments made to the Act are operating as intended and whether they have streamlined the determination of claims made by firefighters seeking compensation for the prescribed cancers.

Safety, Rehabilitation and Compensation Act Review

Closing date
In 2012, a review into the Safety, Rehabilitation and Compensation Act (1988) was undertaken by Mr Peter Hanks QC and Dr Allan Hawke AC. The objectives were to ensure that its objectives were being met and the Comcare Scheme was exemplary in its design and delivery.

Seafarers, Rehabilitation and Compensation Act Review

Closing date
In 2012, a review of the national compensation scheme for seafarers was undertaken by Mr Robin Stewart-Crompton. The final report was published May 2013.

Fair Work Act Review

Closing date
In 2011 and 2012, a review of the Fair Work Act 2009 took place. The panel received more than 250 submissions, and the final report was published 2 August 2012.
