Modern slavery support services

There are safe and free services to help you if you or someone you know is in or at risk of modern slavery. 

You can ask for help, even if you are not sure you are in modern slavery. 

You can get help and support, even if you do not have a visa or have not followed your visa conditions.

If you or someone you know is not safe, or it is an emergency, phone Triple Zero (000) and ask to speak to the police.

Warning signs

The warning signs of modern slavery can look different in different situations. They can depend on the type of modern slavery, the location and the person. Signs could include: 

  • control and manipulation
  • financial exploitation
  • poor living and working conditions
  • emotional and physical signs of neglect, fear, or distress
  • isolation
  • lies and wrong information
  • problems with migration and migration documents.

Report modern slavery 

Anyone can report suspected modern slavery in Australia. 

The Australian Federal Police is Australia’s lead agency for investigating modern slavery crimes. To report suspected modern slavery, contact the Australian Federal Police:

The Australian Federal Police can help keep you safe. They can provide advice and help you find:

  • support services that provide accommodation
  • financial support
  • counselling
  • legal and immigration advice.

Community service providers

Community services providers (organisations that are not part of the police or government) can also help if you are in or at risk of modern slavery. They can help you:

  • access free and confidential support
  • understand your rights and options
  • access free legal advice about your experience of modern slavery and related issues (e.g. your visa)
  • with your immediate safety needs.

Support for Trafficked People Program 

The Australian Red Cross delivers the Support for Trafficked People Program (STPP), a government-funded program that provides support and assistance to people who might have experienced modern slavery. 

It aims to assist people in meeting their safety, security, health and well-being needs, and to develop options for life after they leave the STPP.

The STTP can be accessed through a referral from either the:

  • Australian Federal Police
  • Additional Referral Pathway. 

Forced marriage support 

The Forced Marriage Specialist Support Program (FMSSP) provides tailored support to people who are at risk of, or who have experienced, forced marriage. 

Support may include:

  • finding safe and suitable accommodation
  • financial support
  • medical treatment
  • counselling
  • family mediation, where appropriate and safe to do so. 

The FMSSP is delivered nationally by Life Without Barriers.
