National Bench Book on Aboriginal and Torres Strait Islander Peoples and the Legal System
The Australian Government funded The Australasian Institute of Judicial Administration (AIJA) to develop a National Bench Book on Aboriginal and Torres Strait Islander Peoples and the Legal System.
Led and authored by The Jumbunna Institute for Indigenous Education and Research, the Bench Book is an online educational resource for judicial officers and legal practitioners across all Australian jurisdictions. It aims to promote best practice, develop consistency in judicial decision-making and improve court experiences for Aboriginal and Torres Strait Islander Peoples.
The Bench Book is created, designed and written from an Indigenous standpoint which acknowledges Indigenous ways of knowing, being and doing.
This Indigenous standpoint is informed by personal and community lived experiences. It draws on leading research, knowledge and practices, working within and towards a self-determination framework that recognises and actively supports Indigenous agency.
