Under Section 59 of the Legislation Act 2003, the Attorney-General was required to appoint a body to review all aspects of the operation of the Legislation Act.

Attorneys-General from each Australian jurisdiction have agreed to consult on possible arrangements for a National Register of Enduring Powers of Attorney. We have prepared a consultation paper to seek your views.

The department is seeking the views of industry experts on the provisions in the Personal Properties Act 2009 regarding financial property and intermediated securities.

On 27 August 2020, the Attorney-General, the Hon Christian Porter MP, introduced the legislation to establish the National Commissioner for Defence and Veteran Suicide Prevention (‘National Commissioner’) into Parliament. On 17 July 2017, the proposed legislation to prevent direct cross-examination where there is family violence, was released for public consultation.

In 2017, a public consultation paper was released on a proposed model for a Deferred Prosecution Agreement (DPA) scheme to facilitate a more effective and efficient response to corporate crime by encouraging greater self-reporting by companies.

In 2016, the Australian Government invited public comment on an exposure draft of proposed legislative amendments to the Family Law Act 1975 that would improve the family law system’s response to family violence.

In November 2016, the department sought views on ongoing professional development (OPD) requirements and the Guidelines on conflict of interest and benefit to business for Commonwealth-registered marriage celebrants.

In April 2012, Professor Richard Chisholm AM was engaged by the department to assist with the development of a best practice framework to improve the exchange of information by the federal family courts and the state and territory child protection systems. Outcomes were published in 2013 and 2014.
